How to keep your home cool during summer

09.08.2022

As we’re in the midst of a very warm summer and with heatwaves becoming more frequent, we thought we would share some tips on how to keep your home as cool as possible.

Close your curtains and blinds

A simple solution but it really makes the world of difference! Making sure your curtains or blinds are shut during the day, especially those with direct sunlight, will help keep your rooms that bit cooler.

Open windows in the evening

Once the air outside feels cooler than the air inside your home, open your windows. Not only will you be letting in the lovely cool air, but the humid air will be able to escape, hopefully cooling down your rooms before bedtime.

Keep inside doors open

Keeping your interior doors open, especially if you don’t have an open-plan living space, will help to circulate the air in your home and create a nice airflow.

Avoid using electrical appliances

Try to turn off any electrical items that will be generating heat, for example phone chargers or gaming devices, and avoid using the oven or any other large appliances.

Makeshift air conditioning

Not many people in the UK are lucky enough to have air con, but fear not, you can create a similar effect yourself! Place a bowl of cold water and ice in front of your fan to get a nice, cool breeze.

House plants

Although mainly used for decoration, indoor plants help in the heat as they consume hot air for their natural processes and will release excess water into the air from their leaves, lowering the temperature of themselves and the room they’re in.

Utilise your hot water bottle

Although designed to keep you warm during the colder winter nights, hot water bottles also come in handy during the warmer nights too! Simply fill it with cold water and then pop in the fridge or freezer – try putting it in your bed before you go to sleep to cool it down.

Freeze your bedding

If you particularly struggle trying to sleep when it’s hot, why not pop your bed sheets and pillowcase in the freezer a few minutes before you go to bed? It won’t last all night, but it will be refreshing to get into a cool bed after a day of heat.

Replace your lightbulbs

Consider replacing your regular lightbulbs with LEDs – not only do they produce less heat, but they also use less energy, it’s a win win situation!
