5 ways to prevent damp, mould and condensation

23.01.2023

When there’s too much moisture in your home, you become more susceptible to damp and mould developing on your walls and furniture. When moist air meets a cooler surface, such as a wall, window, mirror, etc., condensation can occur and is usually the cause of such issues.

Here are our top 5 ways to prevent damp, mould and condensation in your home!

Move your furniture
If your home is prone to condensation, moving your furniture away from walls and clearing the tops of high furniture will allow the air to circulate.

Use a dehumidifier
In more extreme cases, a dehumidifier can be bought or hired to extract the moist air in your property. They work by sucking in air from the room at one end, extracting the moisture, and then blowing it back into the room again, adding warmth in the process - reducing the overall humidity in the air.

Wipe down windows and windowsills every morning
To prevent any mould from building up around your windows, you should remove the condensation as soon as you see it. For this, we recommend using a towel, absorbent sponge or even a window vacuum.

Watch out for steam when cooking
Always ensure any pots and pans remain covered when cooking. Not only does this prevent any steam and moisture from escaping, but it also helps to save energy too! As well as this, make sure your extractor hood is on throughout cooking (if you have one!), or even close your kitchen door to ensure the moisture doesn’t escape to other areas of your home!

Keep your house warm
As damp usually occurs when warm air hits cold walls, it’s best to ensure your home is kept at a steady temperature throughout the winter months so surfaces don’t get cold enough to produce condensation.
