History

The land was purchased by the Trinity House Corporation in the 1850’s and by the end of the decade the plot on which Hornblower Lodge sits housed one of two neighbouring lighthouses. At the turn of the century the lighthouse was demolished and replaced with Whitby Foghorn Station. The station issued four sharp blasts of sound within a 90 second window, warning passing ships of danger until it was decommissioned in 1988. The owners purchased the property in 2007 and have carried out many improvements right through to the current day. Hornblower Lodge comprises in brief, a hallway leading through the living room with raised dining area, kitchen with breakfast area, snug, shower room, bathroom and boiler room / cloaks cupboard. Further access leads onto four bedrooms, the master with en-suite shower room. This home features oil-fired central heating. The one-bedroom holiday cottage, with zero rateable value, comprises a entrance hall, living room / kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Many of the rooms offer stunning sea and countryside views with the rooms to the southern aspect enjoying a view along the coast to the neighbouring lighthouse in the distance. Externally the plot has stone-built walls to the boundary with a sweeping driveway leading down to the property and large lawn to the side and rear aspect. The Hornblower Tea Room, now closed, has a self-contained kitchen / preparation area, serving kiosk and various patio areas. An inner courtyard gives access to a laundry room plus there is a W.C with external access utilized by Tea Room Visitors.
